Token and medallion auctions

Exonumia is the numismatics that is not coinage: trade tokens, medalets, commemorative medallions, badges and plaques. Much of it is the most directly historical material in the sale, struck for an event and then carried in a pocket.

What comes up

Colonial and later trade tokens, exhibition and civic medallions, Melbourne Cup and centenary medalets, First World War tribute pieces such as the Dardanelles and 'Lest we Forget' issues, school and society medals, and badges.

How it is described

Catalogued the way a coin is: metal, size, maker or designer where it is known, the reference number where a standard one exists, and the grade. Where a piece names a person or an event, we say what we have been able to establish and what we have not.

Campaign medals are elsewhere

Medals awarded for service are catalogued under militaria, because they are researched differently: the value is in the man and his record as much as in the medal. If you are not sure which you have, send a photograph.
