  • "The dugouts along the sunken roar near Pear Trench, which after their capture were used as advanced Headquarters by the 15th Battalion, following the Australian attack at Hamel, on the morning of 4 July 1918. The bodies of German dead lay strewn along the road and piled up in the dugouts, having been bayoneted by the attacking troops who suffered considerably in the advance against the machine gun nests in this position. Shown: 3096 Lance Corporal A. J. Hammond of 15th Battalion. At left is the beginning of Pear Trench. In the centre is the enemy bomb stop on the road. " (AWM)
