Description:

It is signed by John Hutchinson as head of the Wesleyan Mission at Hobart Town. Hutchinson was also an accomplished artist and his sketches of the Wesleyan Mission in Hobart and surrounding areas initialled 'J.H.H' (John Hicks Hutchinson) have survived.

  • Hutchinson was raised in the Church of England Hutchison but had converted to Methodism before he arrived in Hobart in 1823 as a free settler. He moved on to Sydney to train as a minister before returning to Tasmania where he was involved in the failed attempt at setting up a Methodist mission in Launceston. Returning to Sydney in 1826 he became the first locally ordained minister before setting sail for Tonga as a missionary. After a period of ill health he returned to Sydney in 1828 serving as a minister at Windsor for two years before completing the circle and returning to Hobart in 1830 to head up the Wesleyan mission. He was already familiar with the payee of the exchange John Dunn who was a wealthy merchant banker and also a late convert to Methodism. Dunn who had who had pivotal roles in the establishment of Bank of Van Diemen's Land, the Derwent Bank and the Commercial Bank of Tasmania had earlier contributed to the building of the Wesleyan Chapel at Launceston.
