- Perforated "SPECIMEN" in Ottoman Turkish. In our last sale we featured a specimen of the Turkish 50,000 Livre banknote which is considered one of the world's greatest banknote rarities. Remarkably it had turned up in Australia in an old family album holding a total of 144 specimen notes spanning the war years 1915 to 1918. It is almost certain that the notes in the album were once the reference collection of Huseiyn Cahid the Vice-President of the Ottoman Parliament who was responsible for vetting new banknote designs. As evidence the album also contained a contemporaneous typed list headed "the totality of banknotes printed under my supervision" which corresponds with the circulation notes that bear Cahid's signature. The notes were printed by the German firm Giesecke & Devrient and underwritten by the German Government, the war-time allies of the Ottoman Turks. They were emergency issues printed on very poor-quality paper and, because they continued to circulate right up until notes of the new Republic were issued in 1927, the surviving notes are usually heavily soiled and tattered. The specimen notes from Cahid's archive have now been third-party graded by PCGS and have survived in remarkable condition when compared to the corresponding circulation issues. Hidden amongst the collection of specimen notes were a number of trials which experimented with colour combinations of paper and print not adopted on the circulating notes. It is not unusual for colour trials to be undertaken when new banknote designs are being considered and these discarded designs usually end up in official archives. However, these notes were previously uncatalogued despite the series being extensively researched, and so it is likely that the notes from Cahid's archive are the only surviving examples.
