  • As the 'Great Depression' gripped the world it seems incongrous that a solid gold trophy would be awarded to the winning owner of the 'Sydney Cup.' The cup measuring 22 cms high and weighing 915 gms of solid 18ct gold would have contained about $450 of gold at the time and about $35,000 at todays rate. The maker, Hardy Brothers, valued the cup at $90,000 in 2008 and described it in the following manner. One stamped 18ct yellow gld Australian Jockey Club Sydney Cup 1929 manufactured by Hardy Brothers Jewellers, for the Two Miles race won by Cecil Doyles B.G. "Crucis" . The trophy weighs 914.90 grams. It measures 22cms high, the base and cup measuring 10.5cms diameter. The top of the cup including the 'S' shaped handles measures 19.5cms wide. The cup is engraved with the following: 'AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB SYDNEY CUP TWO MILES WON BY CECIL DOYLES B.G. "CRUCIS" 4 years by "Satelles" - "Pricess B" Trained by DAN LEWIS, Ridden by W.COOK Weight 1.5 Time 3.23 1/4 1929" Note Gold$=$837.20 US This value is based on replacement with a custom made high quality Australian crafted trophy supplied by Hardy Brothers Jewellers. The first running of the Sydney Cup was in 1862 one year after the inaugural running of the Melbourne Cup.
