Notes:
- This letter with the accompanying folded envelope is a rare combination. It is written in the hand of the early explorer John Oxley who by 1825 held the post of Surveyor General for the Colony. He was responding to a request by Richard Fitzgerald for permission to graze a large herd of cattle, the property of Mrs (Lachlan) Macquarie, on "two thousand acres" of land that adjoined his property at Rylstone. Governor Macquarie and his wife had returned permanently to England in 1821, and Fitzgerald who was a personal friend was acting as their agent. The letter mentions that the land would be "reserved for her use " and in due course would be granted to Mrs Macquarie. Fitzgerald eventually purchased the land from Mrs Macquarie and it was incorporated into his "Dabee" homestead at Rylstone. The letter reads: Surveyors General Office 4th November 1825.- Sir,- I am instructed by his Excellency Sir Thos. Brisbane K.C.B. in reply to your application for a Grant of Land whereon to Graze a large Herd of Cattle the property of Mrs. Macquarie, that he will permit you to ??? on her part Two Thousand acres of Land, which shall be reserved for her use until such period as Lord Bathurst's instructions can be received as to making the same into a Grant under the usual Conditions - I have honour to remain Sir You Obed Serv, J.
