Description:

Rare early house mask, Yuat River, Papua New Guinea. Carved hardwood and natural pigments. A house mask (not worn over the face, instead hung in or at the mens house), light, hard wood, coloured dark brown, with remains of earth colour. The mask represents a Papuan ancestral spirit. Triangular face section, the nose long and drawn downwards (tip broken). Open nasal septum, small mouth. The left ear is broken. Good patina. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
