  • Max Cullen is not only a well-known Australia actor but through the years has also produced a series of sardonic sketches that have perfectly captured the Australian character – warts and all. He honed his artistic skills at the renowned Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney’s Rocks district and, with classmate Brett Whiteley in tow, would leave the studio to sketch real Australians in often unsettling surrounds, such as the local “derelicts at (a nearby) soup kitchen”. The subject of this pen and crayon sketch is the entertainment industry, and more particularly Australia’s premier ‘arts’ event, the ‘TV Logie Awards’. For ordinary Australians it is our equivalent of the ‘Oscars’, and every year an international celebrity (or two) is ushered in to add some gravitas to the occasion. Who can forget such luminaries as Michael Cole, the slightly tipsy star of the 1960s hit series the Mod Squad, dropping a famous four-letter word on Australian TV for the first time. No, it wasn’t that one, it was the one beginning with ‘S’ and finishing with ‘T’ but which at the time certainly made front page news, at least in the tabloids. Or what about the year when the evening’s perennial host greeted special guest Mohamed Ali with a very cordial “I like the boy” for which he very nearly received a knockout punch. Sketched more than 20 years ago, Max’s prescient take on Australia’s ‘night of nights’ was left out of a compilation of his work by a publisher who didn’t appreciate his reshaped Gold Logie, which very unlike the genderless Oscar, is grasped tightly and pointed high in celebration by a buxom blonde in a black dress. An early “me too“ moment perhaps ?
