'Contemporary forgery' discovered in 1927 during the Pitt Street excavations

  • This 'copper' dump was likely fashioned from a 'Cartwheel Penny' and passed off as a legitimate dump or fifteen pence. As a contemporary forgery it pays homage to Australia's convict past and has a significant place in Australian numismatics. All the recognised contemporary copper dumps that have surfaced were struck on the same pair of dies suggesting that only one forger was responsible, but some examples are more complete having either plain edges or simulated edge milling. They are also found on thick and thin planchets. Although they were probably all finished in a silvery lead wash to simulate the silver dumps this is the only example that has surfaced where remnants of the wash are still visible. It is also the most highly detailed of the 'copper' dumps and as such is the finest example of the forger's craft.
