Description:

The original coin was struck in silver at Elis around 525 B.C. to honour the achievement of a victorious athlete on the sacred fields of Olympia. The valley of Olympia belonged to the Eleans. It was they who organised the Olympic festival and athletes contests to honour Zeus, patron of the Olympics and the most powerful of gods.
