  • According to Krause, 'the rupees dated 1911 were rejected by the public because the elephant, on the Order of the Indian Empire shown on he King's robe, was thought to resemble a pig, an animal considered unclean by most Indians. Out of a total of 9.4 million pieces struck at both mints, only 700,000 were issued, and many of these were withdrawn and melted with unissued pieces. The issues dated 1912 and later have a re-designed elephant.'
