One of 53 privately held. Signed by the Assistant Commissary General 'Affleck Moodie.' Lowes arrived in Hobart in 1823 as a free settler and established a distillery in 1824. He was politically active and in 1824 he "was a signatory to a memorial to the King soliciting separation of Van Diemen's Land from New South Wales and its independence as a colony" ADB. - This 'Third of Exchange' was a third copy of a tri-part invoice for payment on 'Account of Public Service' that was redeemable at His Majesty's Treasury, Whitehall London. Because of the possibility that a ship could be lost, it was the normal practice for the 'First of Exchange' (the first copy) and the 'Second of Exchange' (the second copy) of a transaction to be sent separately to London on different vessels, with only the first to arrive being honoured. The 'Third of Exchange' (third copy) was kept by the issuer as a receipt of money owed. The 'First of Exchange' left Hobart Town on the 'Lady Harewood' with no date recorded. Condition:
