Description:

One of only 6 of this type privately held. Signed by the Assistant Commissary General 'Affleck Moodie.' £25 represented half the annual salary payable to Massey as the 'Superintendent of Convicts at Port Dalrymple' On the back is written "Pay Mr Jn Sinclair on Order" and signed Thos Massey. Sinclair subsequently signed the note over to J V Taylor

  • This 'Third of Exchange' was a third copy of a tri-part invoice for payment on 'Account of Public Service' that was redeemable at His Majesty's Treasury, Whitehall London. Because of the possibility that a ship could be lost, it was the normal practice for the 'First of Exchange' (the first copy) and the 'Second of Exchange' (the second copy) of a transaction to be sent separately to London on different vessels, with only the first to arrive being honoured. The 'Third of Exchange' (third copy) was kept by the issuer as a receipt of money owed. The 'First of Exchange' left Hobart Town on the 'Henry. on the 16th Nov 1826 and the 'Second of Exchange' on the 'High Crawford.'
