2000 medals were struck in platina (brass) to be offered to natives encountered on Captain Cook's Second Voyage of Discovery

Notes:
- The Resolution and Adventure Medal was commissioned by Sir Joseph Banks and struck at the Soho Mint by Matthew Boulton. Banks had intended to accompany Cook on his second voyage of discovery and had 2,000 medals struck in platina (brass), 142 in silver and two in gold. The platina medals were to be handed to natives that were encountered on the voyage while the silver were to be distributed to Banks' friends and fellows of the Royal Society. The two gold were struck for Banks and King George 111. Banks withdrew from the voyage after a dispute with the Admiralty but the medals were already struck and were put to their intended use. The platina medals were struck on a different reverse die to the silver and gold strikes and have a noticeable die crack as well as many other slight design differences. Although the platina medal was struck in much larger numbers in some regards it is the more desirable issue as they travelled with Cook on the voyage. It is unlikely that any of the silver medals embarked on the journey. Our example is extremely rare as it is not often found in such good condition and seldom with the original suspension loop still attached.
