  • Colonel Fullerton was a great Scots enthusiast whose aim was to introduce a separate coinage for Scotland featuring the portrait of George Prince of Wales (later George IV) who was also the Seneschal or Judicial Steward of Scotland. Fullerton engaged John Milton the medallist for the Prince of Wales to engrave dies for a sixpence, shilling and half crown and these were used to produce contemporaneous copper patterns of the proposed coinage before his operation was closed down. Apparently, Sir Joseph Banks, the equally fervent Englishman, won out when he protested to the King about the substitution of his own portrait with that of the Prince of Wales, and the use of the English Royal Arms on the reverse. Fullerton's' dies were quickly decommissioned but not destroyed and unofficial restrikes were later struck in silver and gold. The silver issues are very scarce but not rare but only a handful of the gold issues survive and probably none better than this gold sixpence graded PCGS MS65.
