  • Thomas Hughes was born in Sydney in 1863 and as the son of a wealthy grazier was sent to England to be educated at Stonyhurst College. He returned to Sydney and in 1887 he established a legal practice 'Hughes and Hughes' with his elder brother John and as men of influence they entered the world of politics. John was the more politically involved and went on the become a Minister of Justice. It was not until 1898 when Thomas openly came out in support of Federation that he became more prominent in public affairs. In 1899 in his capacity as secretary to the NSW Premier George Reid, he attended the Federal Conference of Premiers which was held to draft a Federal Constitution. Afer running unsuccessfully for a state seat in 1901, he turned his attention to municipal affairs and was elected the Mayor of Sydney in 1902. In that coronation year the title was changed to 'Lord Mayor' and as a high holder of office he received a gold Coronation Medal which was duly inscribed ' The Right Honorable Thomas Hughes. The First Lord Mayor of Sydney. 1902.' Hughes died in 1930 but his name lived on in Australian politics. He was the great uncle of Robert Hughes the art critic and author of 'The Fatal Shore' and Tom Hughes the Attorney-General of Australia from 1969-71 in the Gorton Government. In a strange twist, in 2003 a century on, Lucy Turnbull the daughter of Tom Hughes was elected the Lord Mayor of Sydney.
