Fine early Mt. Hagen ceremonial axe, highlands, Papua New Guinea. Carved hardwood with stone blade attached by natural fibres. This stone axe comes from Mount Hagen area, a high plateau in the western highlands of Papua New Guinea. It is a ceremonial axe, a type of axe used mainly as a show of wealth and used at important rituals.
