Description:

The 'Rei Miro' was a breast plate worn by both men and women as a symbol of high rank. Because hardwood was a scarce commodity on Easter Island many of the 'Rei Moro' were carved from driftwood that made landfall.

  • Circa early 20th Century. It is thought the ornament was purchased in New Zealand sometime after 1914 by Mr and Mrs Costar who emigrated there at the outbreak of War in Europe. The family eventually returned to the United Kingdom in the 1920s and the ornament was passed down through the family before being bought by an Australian collector.
