Description:

An important signature on an Extremely Rare banknote being one of only 3 known in private hands

    Notes:
  • This "Third" of Exchange payable to "Mr Will(ia)m Casar" 'on Account of Salary due to him as' "the Master Boat Builder in the Colony" was drawn on the Deputy Commissary Generals Office, Sydney, New South Wales. It was the third copy of a tri-part financial note for payment on account of a public service that was ultimately redeemable at the office for the 'Agent for the Colony of New South Wales, Treasury Chambers' (London). Because of the possibility that a ship could be lost, it was the normal practice for a 'Second of Exchange' (a copy of the original First of Exchange) and a 'Third of Exchange' (a second copy) of the outstanding payment to be sent separately to London on different vessels, with only the first to arrive being honored. The note could also be used in the Colony as a credit at the Commissariat store in the Colony for supplies in lieu of cash, but they were also quite often signed over to other third parties as a form of currency. The notation on the back of this note indicates that its value was transferred to George Thomas of Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope, probably for payment of supplies. The Cape of Good Hope was a port of call for ships replenishing stores en route to the colonies and this exchange would seem to indicate that notes were traded to and fro between the Crown colonies before they were eventually redeemed in London. Of special interest is the signature of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. This Commissariat Note is one of only three 'banknotes' known in private hands that bear this important signature.
