Comes with a 'Spinks' coin envelope marked 'RRR.' There is no recorded mintage of a BWAF 1946 KN Shilling and Krause only lists the BWAf 1946 H Shilling as a Proof but, the coin definitely shows ghosting of the 'KN' & 'H' mintmarks.

- In certain years, the Royal Mint subcontracted part of the coin production for British West Africa to private mints, notably the Heaton Mint and the King's Norton Mint and in these instances it supplied the working dies with identifying mint marks. On evidence it would appear that some of the production of 1946 shillings was earmarked for both the Heaton and King's Norton mints but as there no recorded mintages of BWAf 1946 Shillings from either it follows that the Royal Mint removed the mint marks from the prepared dies and reused them for its own production. What is extremely rare in this circumstance is that the Royal Mint vacillated on which mint would receive a contract and so initially prepared a reverse die with either an 'H' or 'KN' mintmark and then removed that mark to apply another 'KN' or a 'H.' In the end both mint marks were only partially removed resulting in remnants of the 'KHN' showing through. Jerome Remick in his eponymous catalogue does mention 'ghost' mintmarks on other BWAf coins struck by the Royal Mint where existing mint marks were only partially removed but this is the only example where an amalgam of two mint marks appears.
