Description:

Original gilding largely in place.

    Notes:
  • This example is in superior condition with most of the gilding intact. The gorget was worn by an officer as a part of his military uniform. It was worn under the chin and was attached to his collar by a silk ribbon. From 1796 they were made of gilt metal and the normal design was the Crown and Royal Cipher, in this case of George III. See our separate listing for an miniature painting on ivory of an Ensign of a Regiment of the Foot wearing his gorget. The Officer's Gorget is considered to be the inspiration for the Aboriginal Breastplates which were originally introduced by Governor Macquarie to bestow status to the ackowleged head of a tribe. Later they were also given out as a reward for a recognised service such as saving the life of a settler. This particular gorget appeared on loan in the 1993 exhibition 'Poignant Regalia. 19th century Aboriginal Breastplates and Images' that was assembled by the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales.
