- John Hutchinson a convicted wool-stapler was pardoned in 1813 by Governor Macquarie on testimonials that promoted his ability to establish the fledgling Colony's first Paper Mill which was desperately needed to produce newsprint etc. The venture proved a failure and he soon fell out of favour with Macquarie as well as his business partner Simeon Lord who laid claim to Hutchinson's (Paper) Mill. The mill was located on land granted to Hutchinson at the head of the Lachlan Swamp, a remnant of which still exists in Sydney's Centennial Park. As a free man Hutchinson was quick to issue 'One Shilling', 'One Shilling and Sixpence', 'Two Shillings and Sixpence' and 'Five Shillings' Promissory notes all dated 1813 in the year of his release.
