- In 1989, Bernie Fraser the co-signatory on Australian banknotes as Secretary of the Treasury traded signature positions when he took up the position of Governor of the Reserve Bank. For a brief two-month period before Fraser took up his new appointment, (Mervyn) John Phillips, the Deputy Governor was in charge at the Reserve Bank and during this time was quick to issue $20 and $50 denomination banknotes bearing his signature and title. This is the only time that a Deputy Governors signature has appeared on Australian banknotes. One of the badges of high office is the right to record your achievements in a way that your position allows, and so mark his elevation, Phillips authorised the release of 36 strips of ten co-joined $20 notes and 72 blocks of four uncut $50 notes that were made available to the public by ballot. These issues were heavily oversubscribed and quickly became very valuable collectables. What was not publicly known until now was that Phillips kept the first uncut sheets printed of both the $20 and $50 notes. The $20 sheet of 40 notes begins with the first prefix EVJ 000001 and concludes with the last prefix EYD 000001. The $50 sheet of 32 notes also starts with the first prefix YXJ 000001 and finishes with the last prefix YYU000001. Suffice to say these unique sheets in their uncut form are of the ultimate rarity.
