- The opening of Sydney's Harbour Bridge in 1932 was a game-changer for Australia's premier city, linking for the first time the northern and southern shores of its grand harbour. To mark this iconic event, mass-produced souvenirs of all descriptions were marketed including medals, ribbons, plates, glass replicas and photographs. The Aboriginal community at Sydney's La Perouse already had a long-standing tradition of producing boomerangs for the tourist trade and it too was encouraged to produce decorative boomerangs featuring a fine carving of the bridge flanked by native flora and/or fauna to mark the event. Although sticking to a theme they were all individually carved out of a solid piece of mangrove timber in the traditional manner by an Aboriginal hand - with the grain in the wood following the bend in the boomerang. Their distinctive design is also typified by the blue-green pigment that represents the harbour's waters. They differ dramatically from the 'souvenir' boomerangs of later years which are poorly made usually out of straight-grained plywood with their designs crudely inscribed into the surface with a hot poker. These artisan boomerangs may have been produced in the hundreds but they are all unique in their execution and few have survived, particularly in good condition.
