- Rockhampton was founded in 1858 one year before Queensland was proclaimed an independent Colony and, from the outset it was a hotbed for a secessionist movement pushing for a separate Colony in North Queensland. Many of the original town blocks offered by the Crown in 1858-59 were sold to speculators from Sydney and were later offloaded to new settlers at a nice profit. In 1862 locals 'Smith' and 'Burnett' set about consolidating blocks originally sold as part of Portions 19 & 20 to the southern land speculators.
