  • Although the six States of Australia federated (joined) in 1901 to become the Commonwealth of Australia, private bank notes continued to be used until 1910 when they were replaced temporarily with superscribed private bank notes overprinted with the imprimatur of the Commonwealth and 'Payable in Gold Coin at the Commonwealth Treasury at the seat of Government'. The superscribed notes were quickly replaced with newly designed Commonwealth bank notes from 1913.
