Description:

The Halfpenny Token is overstruck on a George IV Halfpenny and the Penny Token on a Victoria Penny. Both coins are exceedingly Rare.

  • Dr Arthur Andrews in his seminal work 'Australasian Tokens and Coins' (1921) catalogued both denominations i.e. a surcharge (overstruck) Halfpenny Token struck on a George III Halfpenny and Penny Token stuck on a Victoria Penny. Andrews mentions that they are also "known on other coins and copper blanks" as is evidenced by this ASN Halfpenny Token struck on George IV Halfpenny although no others appear to have come to light. The picture of this Halfpenny Token was appropriated from an auction catalogue for use in the publication Renniks 'Australian & New Zealand Token Values" where it is erroneously described as a Penny Token struck on a Victoria 1853 Penny. The Penny Token on offer is the clearest example known of this rarity. The tokens are accompanied by a notice of a 'Special General Meeting of the Proprietors' of the Australasian Steam Navigation Company called on the 29th November, 1886 "for the purpose of taking into consideration a proposal for the purchase of the Company's Fleet." In 1887 the ASN and Co. merged its fleet with the Queensland Steam Shipping Company to form the Australasian United Steam Navigation Company.
