Notes:
- The 'smokey corridors of power' certainly existed in 1959 as demonstrated by this string of correspondence between the Prime Minister's Office and the Office of the Governor General seeking a suitable date for a 'smoko'. Once a grand tradition in Australia, a 'smoke night' was an occasion for men of power (often with hyphenated names such as Captain ST J. Scott-Scott) to drag on the 'coffin nails' while contemplating their navels and solving the problems of the world. How times have change - or not. Anyone for a cigar ?
