- The 1954 Proof Halfpenny is very rare in FDC condition. Unlike the full-year proof sets, which were often presented to individuals or institutions or sold to the public, these odd denomination proofs were struck in single digit numbers by the Mint as record pieces and were not meant to be distributed. Most have have only survived in handled or impaired condition. Dark coins or those with a purplish hue are usually indicative of coins that have been handled or cleaned.
