- An interesting variety occurred in 1953 when a very small number of florins were struck on the standard 'Coat of Arms' reverse with 'large denticles, a type first introduced in 1938. The vast majority of 1953 florins struck that year and the standard 1954 florins struck the following year feature a modified reverse with appreciably smaller edge denticles. The later proved to be just a two-year type, as when the next florins were issued in 1956, the reverse reverted again to the 'large denticle' type which continued to the last florins struck in 1963. It is estimated that just a few percent of 1953 florins have 'large reverse' denticles and they are extremely difficult to find in uncirculated condition. It should be noted that PCGS have classified coins that have slightly larger (mid-sized) denticles as the 'large denticle' variety (refer the three coins pictured in the PCGS Population Report). Some of these coins appear to be just the consequence of a sharper centred strike with more defined edge detail. The unambiguous 'large denticle' type has the added identifiers of a double line running between the tail and leg of the kangaroo and doubling of the letters "AUST" of "AUSTRALIA". The 1953 'Large Denticle' Florin with the unique identifiers appears to be the product of just one reverse die which would account for its rarity in mint state.
