  • Although there is no record of its production, the 1933/2 Penny is undoubtedly the product of the Melbourne Mint altering 1932-dated hubs. The process involved hammering flat the last figure on a hub from which working dies could be lifted and the date re-punched. The Mint had employed this process previously on the 1925/3 Shilling and the 1922/1 Threepence, but why it undertook it in 1933 when a large mintage of 6,781,800 coins were struck is a mystery. A possible explanation was that retiring staff were called upon to impart their knowledge of this skill before their departure. Collectors claim there are four distinguishable varieties that show different degrees of the 2 showing through, which suggests multiple experimental dies and a mintage of perhaps 200,000.
