Lot 11
Birmingham Reverse
-
Notes:
- This scarce issue coupled the Indian obverse die used on the 1930 pennies with a Birmingham reverse die with a normal 'aligned 1'. This should be considered an 'experimental' run which is probably the output of just one die as just 46,000 coins were struck with this die combination. To paraphrase W.J. Mullet, a senior officer of the Melbourne Mint, a hub used to produce the 1921 pennies had a '2' removed and a '3' inserted on the subsequent master die. On appearances the reverse of this 1931 Penny variety does closely match the reverse on the 1921 Penny with the 'English' obverse which would seem to affirm this connection. Similar to the 1921 variety it has predominantly straight based letters in the legend with only the slightest hint of curvature on a few. It is a very underrated coin especially in above average condition.
