- The Sydney Mint closed in 1926 and thereafter until the 1940s Melbourne took over the striking all of Australia's bronze and silver coinage. During the 'Great Depression' mintages contracted considerably and this scarce issue constituted only 434,600 coins. The outbreak of World War II led to manpower and material shortages and the Perth, Bombay, Denver and San Francisco mints were called upon to augment coin production.
