- The Indian obverse 1922 pennies were struck at the Perth Mint on obverse dies previously supplied by the Sydney Mint which were coupled with new reverse dies supplied by Melbourne. In January, 1922 London had sent to the Melbourne Mint new Birmingham reverse master hubs dated 192_ and Melbourne had forwarded ten dated dies to Perth in the following month. Approximately 30% of the Indian obverse 1922 pennies struck by Perth have the unaltered Birmingham reverse that clearly shows flat based lettering in the legend. Coins of this variety are very rare in uncirculated condition. However, the greater number of coins appear to come from reverse dies derived from the 1919 //.
