Notes:
- One of the most interesting varieties of the Australian Penny series is the 1921 Penny struck with an 'English Obverse' die. Just where, why and when these coins were made is open to debate but there is certainly a strong circumstantial case that were the product of the Perth Mint. In 1921 the Perth Mint had called for dies so that it could experiment with Penny production and duly received from the Sydney Mint two pairs of obverse and obsolete 1920-dated reverse penny dies. It was assumed that the obverse dies Perth received were both 'Indian' as this was the type predominantly held by Sydney. In early 1922 the Melbourne Mint sent the Perth Mint four 1921-dated dies which it was also assumed were not used as they were quickly superseded by a working supply of ten 1922-dated reverse dies. Thus, by linking two loosely based assumptions researchers decided that all the 1,008,000 pennies struck by the Perth Mint in the 1921 production year were part of the mintage dated 1922. But what seems to have been overlooked is that the Sydney Mint also possessed three 'English Obverse' dies which it had used sparingly to strike 1919 .//. and 1920 /./ pennies. If one of the obverse dies sent from Sydney was of the 'English' type and it was coupled with one or more of the 1921-dated reverses sent from Melbourne, this could well account for a small experimental mintage of 1921 'English Obverse' pennies stuck at the Perth Mint. Only an incredibly small percentage of 1921 pennies were struck with an 'English Obverse', so regardless of whether the coins were Melbourne or Perth struck they are very scarce in average grades, and extremely rare in Mint State of which just two coins have surfaced to date. The 1921 'English' Obverse Penny in PCGS MS64BN is the finest of the two known and should in our opinion be recorded as an 'RB'.
