- The Perth Mint struck its first pennies in 1921 on two 1920-dated reverse dies it received from the Sydney Mint, and there is strong circumstantial evidence that the coins struck were from dies that were marked with a '.' (dot) above the top scroll. W. J. Mullett in his publication "Australian Coinage. An Account of Particular Coins." relates that a mint worker remembers marking the experimental dies that were sent to Sydney with a series of small dots and that he had a vague recollection of a Perth Mark. It seems likely that the '.' (dot) above the top scroll mint mark was re-assigned by Sydney from its stock of experimental dies when it was asked to forward on dies to Perth so that it too could experiment with penny production. At that stage it was the only mint mark that had not been claimed exclusively by either the Melbourne or Sydney mints. It is also likely that the Melbourne Mint tested all the 'experimental' dies for the varieties before they were sent to Sydney and subsequently Perth, as an example of the 1920 .// Penny was displayed at a Numismatic Society meeting in Melbourne in November 1920, along with an example of the 1920 'Plain' Penny, the 1920 .//. Penny and the 1920 /./ Penny. No mention is made as to whether the latter was an English or Indian obverse strike.
