- The PCGS Census can provide good guidance as to what is an easily achievable goal for certain coins and denominations. Usually there appears a natural barrier for a coin to broach in order to achieve a sought-after grade and you will get a disproportionate number of coins stuck at this tier. A larger number of coins that are available at a particular grade will obviously affect the price, and so collectors are quite often able to secure a relatively high grade coin at an affordable level. It is only beyond this grade that prices will escalate, and that is why some dealers will send the same coin back for review over and over again in the hope that it will eventually get looked at with more favourable eyes and get bumped up a grade. For example, the cut-off grade for the 1914, 1916, 1918 and 1925 Shillings is MS64, while it is difficult to go beyond an MS65 in 1936. With the key-dates it is harder to arrive at the natural divide as so few coins make it into MS holders. One such key-date is the 1912 Shilling which for a very long period had just one example known in MS65. We have noted that there is now another coin that has been graded alongside the 'Benchmark' coin at MS65 and can only presume that it is a fresh find, or a coin that has lucked a re-grade. However, what is certain is that the 'Benchmark' coin is no slider being fully struck-up especially on the Emu's feathers a high-point severely lacking on other high-grade examples of this date. It is a coin unlikely to be bettered.
