  • Contrary to media reports in recent years the greatest boxing match ever held in Australia occurred in 1908 when around 20,000 fans, or roughly one in every 200 Australians, witnessed the historic clash of Tommy Burns v Jack Johnson at Sydney's Rushcutters Bay. In comparison less than one in 500 Australians ventured to Brisbane's Lang Park for the 2017 Horn v Pacquiao match-up. In 1908 the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion stood at the pinnacle of World sporting dominance, and so the result of the Tommy Burns v Jack Johnson fight held on Boxing Day in Sydney shook the white supremist view of the world to its core. Johnson, the black American champion had been denied a licence to contest the championship in America because of his colour, and had come to Australia to fight the white Canadian title holder Burns who had been lured by Hugh McIntosh, a local entrepreneur, on the promise of a £7,500 purse (Johnson was eventually paid £1,500). Johnson's victory led to a seven-year search for the 'Great White Hope' to reclaim the title for the white man. There are only five part-tickets and three stubs that are known to have survived from the fight and this £5 Reserved ticket complete with matching stub is currently the only 'complete' ticket in private hands. A true museum piece.
