  • Wilkinson's report to the Minister of Mines describes "the specimen as unquestionably an artificial production. It consists of white-veined marble that has been rudely carved into the form of a human body and smeared over with a clayey white-wash." The Sydney Morning Herald, 29 May 1889, had described the specimen as "a petrified human body discoverd by Messrs Brydon and Sala in their marble quarry at Calula, Mullion Creek near Orange. The "body of a man, about 5 feet 10 inches in height, well-formed, and evidently, from the shape of the head and contour of the features, a Europen," could be viewed at 294 Castlereagh Street on payment of a one shilling admission fee.
