  • Notes:
  • At the opening of the Melbourne Mint in 1872 a number of presentation coins were distributed amongst the dignatories in attendance. Unlike the circulation coins of that year, the presentation coins are identified by the medal alignment of the obverse and reverse dies. It is thought that perhaps fifty were struck but few have survived and it is considered a major rarity in any grade. It is noted that the 'Quartermaster Collection' which was described as "the most comprehensive collection of Australian ingots, Patterns, Proofs, Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns never assembled by a private or public institution" did not have an example.
