- This medal was struck (cast ?) in 1861 by medallists Thomas Stokes to commemorate the ill-fated Victorian Exploring Expedition which left Melbourne on August 20 1860 to attempt the first south north crossing of Australia. The leaders of the expedition Robert Burke and William Wills both perished on the journey but their tragic end ensured that they achieved a lasting place in Australian folklore.
